ABINGTON, PA -- In January, the Abington Police Department disposed of 185 guns that had accumulated in their evidence locker since 1998.

The guns had been surrendered to police over the last 19 years and ultimately could not be returned to a qualified owner, authorities said.

The guns were taken to by Abington police evidence custodians to a foundry, where they were shredded and then melted in a high temperature furnace, police said.

Permission for the operation was granted thanks to a court order from the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office.
