Two Banning police officers had to be taken to the hospital this week after PCP fumes escaped from an evidence packet that was about to be destroyed.
The incident took place Tuesday afternoon, July 31, in the Banning Police Department’s evidence room. An officer was prepping the sealed evidence packet for destruction and fumes from the liquid PCP escaped, the Riverside County department of Environmental Health said in a news release.
PCP is a hallucinogenic drug that can cause delusions, disordered thinking and extreme anxiety, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse.
A hazardous materials team came into the evidence locker, removed the package from the evidence envelope and resealed it in a new package, along with gloves used by the officer and the original envelope.
The officers were treated and released from an area hospital that day.
