Beckley police evidence technician charged in missing drugs

The U.S. Attorney's office recently charged a former Beckley Police Department evidence technician after prescription pills went missing from the department's evidence.

The single-page information, filed Oct. 5, alleged Gabriella Brown, 31, of Beckley fraudulently obtained oxycodone.

The information did not quantify the amount of oxycodone allegedly taken.

An information "often indicates that the defendant is cooperating with prosecutors," a news release from the U.S. Attorney's office notes,

In an Aug. 23 news conference, Beckley Police Chief Tim Deems said the department discovered the missing prescription pills earlier that month.

The Drug Enforcement Agency is in charge of the investigation into the missing evidence.

If convicted, Brown could face up to four years in prison.
