Peel Regional Police say the investigation into an alleged internal theft of evidence money at the A. Grenville and William Davis Courthouse in Brampton is complete. One employee — an exhibits clerk — has been charged with a single count of theft.

Police have not released the name of the clerk charged May 10 with theft under $5,000, but The Guardian has confirmed it is Lesley Beattie, 33, of Orangeville.

She will make her first appearance in court on that charge June 7.

Police said they began their investigation in response to a complaint that money being held as evidence in a criminal trial was missing. The amount is less than $5,000, according to police.

It's unknown if the money has been recovered.

The Ministry of the Attorney General said this week it would not comment on matters pertaining to a government employee. The ministry had no comment when asked how the alleged theft of evidence has impacted the trial.
