Former Greenville Police Chief Dealing With Major Evidence Room Mess In Asheville

Asheville, NC

Asheville police are still trying to sort through problems in the department's evidence room with a new chief at the helm. Chief William Anderson took the position March 1st after serving nearly 6 years as chief for the Greenville, NC Police Department. He replaced Bill Hogan, who retired in May 2011 as the state was investigating the evidence room and missing items.

The Asheville-Citizen Times reports that the agency has spent $175,000 since the problems first came to light a year ago. Its current evidence room is sealed.

Problems include up to 14 boxes of cash with no clear ties to cases, items on shelves with no tags and piles of evidence left on floors and in doorways,

City leaders were stunned after seeing a report from a private company that inspected the sealed evidence room. Councilman Chris Pelly says it looked like his son's college dorm room.

The problems were first revealed in an April 2011 report, where inspectors couldn't find 115 of 1,097 items, including 27 guns and 54 containers of drugs.
