Former Gallatin County, IL

BENTON, ILL. • Former Gallatin County, Ill., Sheriff Raymond M. Martin was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Benton to two consecutive life sentences plus 10 years.

Martin, 48, of Junction, Ill., was convicted in September on 14 counts related to drug trafficking and witness tampering, plus one count of avoiding currency reporting requirements.

Officials said he stole marijuana from his department's evidence room, dealt it from his squad car while on duty in 2008-09 and threatened to kill two main witnesses against him.

He also was ordered to forfeit $76,090 in cash and his $200,000 home, and pay $51,500 in fines.

The drug dealing took place between November 2008 and May 2009.
