Former Mobile County deputy arrested on drug, theft charges

Former Mobile County Sheriff's Office Deputy Seth Stevens was arrested Tuesday, according to the Mobile County District Attorney's Office.

Charges include possession of a controlled substance, theft of property, possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with evidence and possession of prescription pills.

"Basically he was making arrests, seizing evidence as part of his responsibilities as a deputy but then not turning that evidence into the property room and using it for his own personal use," said Mobile County District Attorney Ashley Rich.

Stevens, 26, was released on bail, according to records at Mobile County Metro Jail.

MCSO Public Affairs Director Lori Myles said Stevens was fired in May after evidence from cases he was connected to came up missing. An investigation revealed he was taking the evidence. Deputies say they found the missing evidence in Stevens' home. He had been a deputy since 2014.

The Sheriff's office handed the case over to the District Attorney's office. DA Rich says although police are enforcers of the law, they're not above the law.

"It doesn't matter who you are or what you do. If you are breaking the law then we have a duty and an obligation to make sure that we prosecute that individual. So it doesn't matter the color of your skin, it doesn't matter where you work," said Rich.
