OLD TOWN, Maine — A veteran officer with the city’s police department who resigned earlier this year is under investigation in connection with a reported theft from the department’s evidence room, Old Town police Chief Scott Wilcox said Friday.

“Sgt. Mike Hashey did resign in April,” Wilcox said. “He is the subject of a criminal investigation that involves the alleged theft of items from the department’s evidence room.”

Wilcox declined to comment on the items taken, or how the reported theft could affect the police cases Hashey was working on before his departure.

“I can tell you that the Waldo County District Attorney’s Office is handling this investigation and prosecution,” Wilcox said.

Waldo County is handling the case because the Penobscot County District Attorney had a conflict of interest, the police chief said. Waldo County Assistant District Attorney Bill Entwisle is in charge of the case, but was out of the office on Friday, a receptionist at the district attorney’s office said.

Messages left seeking comment from the Penobscot County DA’s office and from Hashey were not immediately returned.

“I can tell you that he is a 23-year veteran of the Old Town Police Department, hired in 1992 as a patrol officer,” Wilcox said of Hashey.

The department currently has 15 full-time officers, with one opening, the police chief said.

“We’re in the hiring process,” Wilcox said.

The Pine Tree Chapter of the American Red Cross honored Hashey and Detective Jamie Slauenwhite in 2014 with Real Hero Awards.

They were on duty when an Old Town man fatally stabbed his pregnant girlfriend, sparking a police standoff at his downtown apartment in 2013. Inside the apartment at the time were the couple’s two young children, ages 2 and 4.

Hashey was the one who convinced the man to let the children leave, now retired Capt. Kyle Smart said at the time. Slauenwhite “was the one who carried both of those kids out of there,” Hashey said at the time.

The standoff ended when a Maine State Police officer shot and killed the man.
