Sardis, GA

Burke

A former Sardis, Ga., policeman fatally shot early Monday after apparently breaking into a police station evidence room was identified Wednesday in connection with two attempted home burglaries.

Dwayne Burke, 34, attempted to burglarize a home on Saturday in the 500 block of Jones Avenue in Waynesboro, said Investigator Teddy Jackson, of the Waynesboro Police Department.

A woman who was home at the time of the attempted burglary saw Burke’s photo online Tuesday night.

A resident of the same neighborhood also identified Burke as the assailant in another attempted burglary Saturday, Jackson said.

Burke was killed when an unidentified Sardis police officer noticed the evidence room had been broken into. He summoned a Burke County sheriff’s deputy and during the investigation found Burke armed with an ax.

A struggle followed and the Sardis officer shot Burke, who had a history of legal trouble.
