LAFAYETTE, Ga. — State agents have arrested a woman accused of taking money from the police department during her time as LaFayette City Court clerk.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says on Tuesday, March 10, Jan Bridges was arrested for theft of fiduciary - theft over $500.
Back in October 2019, LaFayette Police contacted the GBI's office in Calhoun to ask for help investigating the City Court Services' fines and fees, as well as money that had gone missing from the police department.
The GBI says an audit was conducted by the City of Lafayette for the Police Department's City Court Clerk's office. While reviewing records dating back to 2013, an outside firm discovered "large sums of varying amounts of money missing." The GBI says there were no records prior to 2013.
After a lengthy investigation by the GBI, the agency's Financial Investigations Unit in consultation with the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorneys' office secured arrest warrants for Bridges.
Bridges was booked into Walker County Jail.
