Sheriff calls in state police

Charges of burglary and theft have been filed against two inmates accused of taking pills and other items from a temporary evidence room at Hardin County Jail, County Board Chairman Wayne Eichorn said Wednesday.

Jerry L. Hicks, 45, and Skyler Ramsey, 22, both of Rosiclare, were charged Wednesday and bond was set at $75,000 for each man. Charges will likely be filed against a third inmate as well.

Eichorn said his information was limited but that the theft and burglary occurred when inmates were apparently out of their cells for laundry and other duties.

A weapon was also moved but was not in the possession of the inmates, he said.

Hardin County Sheriff Joyce Cullison moved the inmates to the nearby Saline County Detention Center Sunday and called in state police to investigate the incident.

Cullison could not be reached for comment because she was “in meetings all day,” according to a woman who answered the sher-iff’s office phone Wednesday.

“When she discovered what happened, she followed protocol and called state police and crime scene techs in to investigate,” Eichorn said. “State police investigated and brought charges against the inmates.”

A spokesman for state police Zone 7 Investigations did confirm the investigation but said directed calls for information to the sheriff’s office and District 22 troopers. Messages left with District 22 state police were not returned.

Hardin County State’s Attorney Melissa Presser did not return a message left seeking comment.
