Johnson County, NC

A former Johnston County sheriff’s detective has been arrested by the SBI on charges of stealing evidence. Brian Clayton Johnson, 42, formerly of Benson, but currently a resident of Thomasville, was arrested Tuesday. Mr. Johnson was terminated from his position with the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office March 19. While employed as a sheriff’s detective, Mr. Johnson reportedly met with a Raleigh Police detective to take possession of a handgun stolen in Kenly, and recovered by Raleigh Police officers. An investigation allegedly revealed Mr. Johnson never returned the gun to the evidence room at the Johnston County Sheriff’s Office, nor did he return the gun to the owner, WTSB reported.

The weapon was located in Davidson County during a search warrant conducted by Thomasville Police and the SBI. Mr. Johnson was charged with altering, stealing or destroying criminal evidence. He was immediately released on a $5,000 bond.
