The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) is charging a deputy with the Murray County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) with stealing more than $10,000 worth of items from an evidence room.

GBI spokeswoman Nelly Miles says agents were contacted on Tuesday by the MCSO to investigate allegations of missing money from the evidence room.

Miles says that investigation led to the arrest of 49-year-old Deputy Donna Woody, who was the evidence custodian.

Agents charged Woody with six counts of tampering with evidence, one count of violation of oath of office, and one count of theft by fiduciary.

Miles says more than $10,000 worth of material was missing from the evidence room.

Woody turned herself in to the Murray County Sheriff's Office Thursday morning.

We asked the MCSO for comment on this case. They referred us to the GBI.

This is a developing story. Depend on us to keep you posted.
