PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — A Providence police officer has been charged with stealing jewelry from a police evidence room, and city officials say they plan an audit.

Police and the state attorney general's office said Thursday 36-year veteran officer Michael McCarthy was charged with one count of fraudulent conversion. He was arraigned Thursday and released on $5,000 bail.

He is suspended without pay. It is unclear if McCarthy is represented by a lawyer.

Public Safety Commissioner Steven Pare and Police Chief Hugh Clements said they don't believe any current cases are affected. They said McCarthy had access to items like jewelry, cash, and guns. They said more charges may be filed against him.

Police said the investigation began when a sergeant in charge of the evidence room noticed the jewelry was missing as police prepared to return it to its owner.
