NEW BRUNSWICK — A Piscataway police officer today admitted stealing an undetermined amount of cocaine while working as the department’s evidence officer, Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce J. Kaplan announced today.
Albert A. Annuzzi, 47, of Matawan, pleaded guilty to a count of third degree official misconduct, admitting he took the cocaine for personal use from the evidence vault, while working as the evidence officer, a position he held since January 2010.
Under the terms of a plea agreement reached between the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office and Arseneault, Whipple, Fassett & Azzarello LLP, a Chatham law firm representing Annuzzi, the defendant will be sentenced to a prison term of up to three years and must serve two years before he can be eligible for parole.
In addition, Annuzzi will be banned from holding any public job in New Jersey and forfeits his pension under the plea agreement.
He is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 21, 2012 in New Brunswick before Superior Court Judge Bradley Ferencz, who accepted the guilty plea during a hearing today.
Annuzzi was charged on April 25, 2011, after an investigation by the Piscataway Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office determined that on various occasions between January 2010 and April 2011, he took cocaine, which was being held as evidence in other criminal cases.
He was suspended from duty and remains free on bail until the sentence is imposed.
