Herkimer, NY

A police investigator in central New York is charged with stealing more than $9,600 from the police evidence room to feed a gambling habit.

Robert Risi, an 18-year veteran with the Herkimer Police Department, was charged Wednesday with felony grand larceny as well as misconduct and petty larceny.

The 42-year-old pleaded not guilty at an arraignment in Herkimer County Court and freed on $20,000 bail, to reap-pear in court July 2. He's suspended without pay.

Risi's lawyer, George Aney, said he wants to review Risi's statement to police before commenting on the case.
