A Regina police officer accused of stealing a Home Depot gift card from the police evidence room has resigned from the force.

On Monday, Chief Troy Hagen accepted the resignation of Const. Darryl Blampied, 44, the Regina Police Service said in a news release.

Blampied, an 11-year member of the police service, is still facing criminal charges in connection with the alleged theft and use of the $1,000 gift card.

He's also accused of stealing an iPad tablet computer from the evidence room while on duty.

Blampied's resignation was effective Aug. 12, police said. He had been on administrative leave since July 18.

"I wish to make it clear that, had Mr. Blampied not resigned, it was our intention to dismiss him," Hagen said in a news release.

When he was charged last month, police said someone had spent about $500 on the card and the evidence pointed to Blampied.

The card had been seized by police during a fraud investigation three years ago.

It's not the first time Blampied has been charged with a crime.

Last year, he pleaded guilty to drunk driving.

He was suspended from driving for a year and had to pay a fine. The police service also placed him on two years probation.

Blampied will be back in court on Sept. 9, at which time his new charges will be dealt with.
