SAUK CITY (WKOW) -- The Sauk Prairie Police Department is taking extra precautions to prevent people from stealing prescription medication from their medication drop box.

This comes after a former officer, Matt Alt, was arrested for taking prescription drugs back on December 2nd. Alt later resigned from his position.

According to the criminal complaint, Alt was taking prescription drugs that members of the community had dropped off to be destroyed. Alt was one of only two officers with the department who had keys to the box.

Chief Jerry Strunz tells 27 News the department has added a second lock on the box that requires two officers and two different keys to unlock the box. Strunz also says a recently performed audit of their evidence room revealed nothing was missing.

Chief Strunz asked the Baraboo Police Department to help them perform an independent audit of their evidence as an extra precaution. Strunz says the process has actually aided his department in finding new procedures that will make cataloging evidence more efficient and less time consuming.
