An evidence custodian with the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office was suspended without pay March 2, pending an investigation regarding missing evidence money.

The SCSO began using a barcode system to track evidence when supervisors said they found inconsistencies with evidence money, according to Sheriff Tony Cameron.

The sheriff said evidence bags, that should have had cash in them, were found in the custodian’s locked desk instead of the evidence room.

The bags had either no cash or less than what they should have contained, authorities said.

Cameron suspended the custodian after supervisors alerted him. He contacted the State Attorney’s Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. The FDLE is handling the criminal investigation, Cameron said, and will audit the evidence room.

“I am deeply disappointed that a trusted employee of our sheriff’s office appears to have violated our trust,” he said.
