A Shelby County grand jury has indicted a Simpsonville police officer accused of breaking into the department’s evidence lockers and taking narcotics, handguns and about $30,000 in cash.

Officer Terry Putnam, 54, was indicted on charges including tampering with evidence, official misconduct, criminal mischief and four counts relating to thefts from the evidence locker.

The break-in happened Nov. 6, according to Kentucky State Police.

Putnam was arrested in January. A state police news release sent after his arrest said that Putnam and another officer were the only officers in the department to refuse a polygraph test.
