A state trooper being investigated for allegations that he stole a Rolex watch from evidence storage resigned this week, Vermont State Police confirmed.

Giancarlo DiGenova, 44, was placed on paid leave in December after state police began investigating him in response to the disappearance of valuables from the temporary evidence storage at the Williston barracks. The missing items included a gold Rolex men's watch, stud earrings, Apple earbuds and a wallet, court records show.

Investigators suspected DiGenova of having committed multiple crimes, including grand larceny, sale of stolen property and possession of stolen property, as well as official misconduct, VTDigger previously reported.

DiGenova resigned effective Tuesday, according to state police spokesperson Adam Silverman. The news was first reported by NBC5.

The criminal investigation into DiGenova is ongoing, Silverman said. No criminal charges have been filed against him as of Thursday.

DiGenova, of Essex, declined to comment on his resignation, citing the advice of his attorney. His attorney, David Sleigh, also declined to comment.

Sleigh previously said that multiple other people had access to the temporary evidence storage room, and that DiGenova denies any wrongdoing.

DiGenova became a trooper in 2009, and his assignments included the narcotics investigation unit. In 2019, the U.S. Attorney's Office for the District of Vermont recognized him with its outstanding collaborative investigation award.
