A western New York police chief has been charged with drug possession.
Kenmore Village Police Chief Peter Breitnauer was charged Friday with possession of hydrocodone after a federal investigation, according to U.S. Attorney James Kennedy.
According to authorities, Breitnauer was taking prescription pills from the New York State Medication Drop Box located at the Kenmore Police Station in Erie County.
Breitnauer allegedly told authorities he is addicted to hydrocodone and has been taking the drugs from the box for his personal use.
Authorities said Breitnauer hid more than 100 stolen hydrocodone pills in a closet in his office.
The charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $100,000 fine.
