HOMER, Ga. — A former prosecutor in northeast Georgia has been arrested on theft charges.
The Athens Banner-Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1XfO902 ) 32-year-old Samuel Elias Skelton is charged with 33 counts of theft by taking. Skelton is a former assistant district attorney for the Piedmont Judicial Circuit.
The newspaper reports he was released Thursday from the Banks County Jail on $31,000 bail.
In a joint statement, the Banks County Sheriff and Georgia Bureau of Investigation say Skelton was indicted June 2.
The statement says the GBI was called in to investigate in August 2015 after the sheriff's office "discovered irregularities in their evidence room involving Skelton." The investigation uncovered thefts of court fines and fees.
A special prosecutor was assigned to the case.
It was not immediately clear whether Skelton has an attorney.
