A former South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper was sentenced to five years in prison after being convicted of stealing nearly $70,000 in drug money seized by his department, according to the attorney general's office.
Brian William Biehl was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine. In February, he pleaded guilty to one count of grand theft by law enforcement. He originally faced up to 10 years in prison.
According to court documents, Biehl estimated he took about $53,000 in seized drug money, but investigators determined he'd taken $69,668 from 15 different seizures of money between May 5, 2012, and Oct. 19, 2016.
