Court records indicate a former Vermont police officer accused of stealing heroin from a police evidence locker for a woman with whom he was having an intimate relationship has changed his plea to federal drug charges.
The Valley News reports 31-year-old John Breault has agreed to plead guilty to felony distribution of heroin as part of a deal with prosecutors.
The original complaint filed by an FBI agent says Breault gave the drugs to the woman, who was addicted to opioids, this past summer. Breault resigned from the Royalton police department in October 2017.
Breault's lawyer said Wednesday his client has accepted responsibility "since Day 1." Breault is scheduled to plead guilty March 9. He faces up to 20 years in prison.
