SURPRISE - Someone within the Surprise Police Department is stealing drug money from their evidence facility, according to the police chief.

More than $33,000 in seized drug money has gone missing from Surprise Police. It's believed to have been stolen, not misplaced.

A department employee has been identified as an investigative lead.

Phoenix Police is investigating the crime, and Surprise PD are doing an internal investigation.

Earlier this week, Phoenix Police announced one of their detectives was under investigation for stealing thousands of Oxycontin pills from an evidence locker. The detective was not arrested, but the department is building a case against him. He resigned when supervisors confronted him.
