Cop Stole Guns From Turn-In Program In Clarendon Hills, Police Allege

A former police officer is accused of stealing five weapons from a gun turn-in program run by his department.

Daniel Ryan of Clarendon Hills, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago, is charged with several counts of possession of a stolen firearm and official misconduct, all felonies. If convicted, he could face up to 15 years in prison, the Clarendon Hills Patch reports.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the state's attorney's office received an anonymous tip in February that guns were disappearing from the department's cache. The office contacted the FBI, and a joint investigation apparently led to Ryan.

“Anytime a public servant is charged with a crime it is indeed a sad day,” DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement. “I want to make it perfectly clear, however, that these charges are against one man and are not an indictment on an entire police force."

The five stolen guns were an Ithaca M1911 A1 World War II U.S. Army .45 caliber gun, a .22-caliber Short Butler, a Smith and Wesson .38 caliber Airlight Special, a Mossberg 590 12 gauge shotgun and a Connecticut Valley Bobcat .50 caliber gun, writes TribLocal.

None of them was linked to any criminal activity, Berlin's office pointed out. Instead, they were given to the department as part of a turn-in program for unwanted firearms.
