Former Jennings Police Chief Johnny Lassiter (pictured) is under arrest, accused of stealing items from the department's evidence room.

Lassiter is facing charges of theft (over $1,500), malfeasance in office, obstruction of justice, and injuring public records.

According to Louisiana State Police, the thefts were discovered after an audit of the evidence room conducted by both the Jennings Police Department and State Police.

He was booked into the Jefferson Davis Parish jail, but is now being held in the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center for safety reasons.

Lassiter resigned on Tuesday.
