A former Scott County sheriff's deputy has been indicted on charges that he broke into the department's evidence locker and stole several pieces of drug evidence, authorities said Tuesday.

Cody Scott Yancey, 25, is charged with three counts of burglary, one count of theft under $500, one count of possession of burglary tools, one count of official misconduct, one count of tampering with evidence, two counts of attempted tampering with evidence and two counts of vandalism under $500, according to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.

TBI agents launched an investigation into the deputy in October at the request of 8th Judicial District Attorney General Jared Effler.

Agents learned that, "on several occasions between Sept. 22 and Oct. 14, Yancey made illegal entry into his department's temporary evidence storage and removed multiple pieces of drug evidence," according to a TBI news release Tuesday. "The investigation further revealed that Yancey changed locks on the evidence storage box on two occasions and illegally entered detectives' offices."

Yancey subsequently was fired from the Scott County Sheriff's Department.

He was booked in the Scott County Jail on $10,000 bond Tuesday.

More details as they develop online and in Wednesday's News Sentinel.
