STILLWATER, Okla. — A former Stillwater Police sergeant is in rehab at a Colorado drug treatment facility after being accused of stealing prescription painkillers from the department’s prescription drug disposal vault.

Thomas Robert McConaghy, 42, is charged with larceny of a controlled dangerous substance, a felony, according to court records.

District Attorney Tom Lee said that McConaghy will be in treatment for approximately a month. He will face charges following treatment.

An affidavit states on May 26 an officer found a brown paper sack with prescription bottles in a patrol car previously driven by McConaghy.

The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation talked to the people to which the prescriptions where issued and their pharmacies, according to the affidavit. OSBI agents learned the prescription medicine found in the police cruiser was meant for the department’s Drug Take Back disposal programs.

The investigation ended after McConaghy admitted to another officer via a text message that he had an opiate problem and had taken from the pill disposal vault, according to the affidavit.

Lee said there is no bail yet for McConaghy and he is set to appear in court in three weeks.

If convicted, McConaghy faces imprisonment for up to 10 years and a fine of up to $10,000 or both.
