Columbus, IN

(COLUMBUS) - A Columbus police officer has resigned and the Indiana State Police are investigating an incident involving the Columbus Police Department's property storage room and narcotics.

A Columbus police officer has resigned and the Indiana State Police are investigating an incident involving the Columbus Police Department's property storage room and narcotics.

Sgt. Matt Harris, spokesman for the department, said an internal audit of the property room records revealed that an officer checked out narcotics from the storage room correctly, but then did not return them in the proper time frame required under department policies.

Harris says the security of the property storage was never compromised. After an internal investigation, the incident was referred to the Indiana State Police for investigation.

The officer involved has since resigned, Harris says. No further information, including the officer's name, is being released, while the investigation continues.

Officials say the property room is audited and inspected four times a year. The discrepancy was found during the September audit.
