Saugerties, NY

KINGSTON – A sergeant in the Saugerties Town Police Department faces an official misconduct charge for allegedly taking four packs of cigarettes from the evidence vault at the police station and then falsifying an internal evidence vault document in an attempt to cover it up.

He was the officer in charge of the evidence vault at the time.

Ulster County District Attorney Holley Carnright said Sgt. John Scheffel will likely lose his job over the incident if found guilty in Village of Saugerties justice Court.

He has been on administrative leave from the police force.
