The State Auditor has issued a report raising questions about operations in the Decatur County Sheriff's office. The sheriff abruptly resigned in March amid allegations he had created a hostile work environment.
The auditor's review covered the last 21 months Herbert Muir was sheriff in Decatur County and his wife, Tammy, was the office manager. County officials asked for the examination, citing concerns about spending.
State Auditor Mary Mosiman says auditors couldn't find a nearly $3,800 night vision scope that Muir had been reimbursed for, but a family member later brought it into the office.
The review faulted Muir for failing to maintain a secure evidence room before December of last year. There were no logs recording seized or forfeited property and auditors could not determine if evidence was missing or had been tampered with.
The auditor's report raised questions about a couple of small credit card purchases for gas which didn't have an explanation about the travel. Auditors were unable to track whether the yearly clothing allowance limit for employees in the Decatur County Sheriff's office had been followed.
