Retired Officer Investigated After Items Discovered Missing From Evidence Room/

The former officer is being investigated after property was discovered missing from a 30-day hold room at the police zone.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A former Pittsburgh Police officer is under investigation after items were discovered missing from an evidence room.

Prior to his retirement, KDKA is told that the former officer, who is now being investigated by city officials, was working at Zone 2 in the city's Hill District neighborhood.

Sources say the former officer is being investigated after property was discovered missing from a 30-day hold room at the police zone.

Sources say the hold rooms are a place to temporarily keep evidence, along with found property.

The former officer had been with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police for more than 20 years, starting in 1996 and retiring just a few weeks ago at the end of July.

Katie O'Malley, assistant communications manager for the city, released a statement in an email, saying: "We do not speak publicly on [Office of Municipal Investigations] OMI investigations. I can confirm that there is an OMI investigation and that he is no longer an employee."

At this time, there is no confirmation on what exactly was missing from the Zone 2 holding room or how the former officer was linked to it.

Charges have not been filed against the former officer, which is why we're not identifying him in our report. The OMI investigation is ongoing, with no approximate date as to when it will be concluded.
