Sentencing for former Jennings chief on hold

JENNINGS, La. (AP) - A sentencing date has not been set for a former Jennings police chief accused of taking drugs and money from the police department's evidence room.

Fifty-three-year-old Johnny Lassiter pleaded guilty to two counts of malfeasance in November.

Charges of theft over $1,500, obstruction of justice and injuring public records were dismissed as part of a plea agreement earlier this year.

District Attorney Michael Cassidy tells the American Press the court is waiting on a pre-sentence investigation report from probation and parole officials to be completed before setting a sentencing date.

Lassiter faces up to five years in prison and a $5,000 fine on each count.

Lassiter was arrested in January after an audit by state police found drugs and money missing from the police department's evidence room.
