Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine has announced that DNA testing done as part of his Sexual Assault Testing Initiative has resulted in over 4,000 matches of previous offenders already in the system.
The DNA matches to the Combined DNA Index System were recovered from over 11,000 previously untested rape kits. Nearly 300 law enforcement agencies have sent in these rape kits to BCI to be tested as part of the Sexual Assault Testing Initiative. Ohio law enforcement agencies were required to submit any remaining untested sexual assault kits by March of this year. 500 defendants in Cuyahoga county alone have been indicted after DNA tests and follow-up investigations.
Attorney General DeWine launched the initiative in 2011.
