WELSH, La. (AP) - State police continue to look into how a handgun reported missing from the Welsh Police Department's evidence room nearly three years ago ended up back on the streets.
The American Press reports the investigation, launched at the request of Police Chief Marcus Crochet, began in 2013 after a Glock pistol recovered from an abandoned stolen vehicle in 2009 went missing.
An independent audit of the evidence room revealed that the handgun, along with other weapons, money and narcotics, were missing. The handgun was recovered by the Calcasieu Parish deputies during a traffic stop in March.
Crochet said he became aware of the missing weapon after taking office in January 2013.
